How the idea of being a travel blogger was sown
The idea of writing about my travel experiences was sown by my trip to Vietnam in April 2019. I wrote a comprehensive guide on Hanoi and shared it with my friends and family. It made me happy when a couple of them went on to plan their trip to Vietnam after reading it. But the happiness that I felt while penning down the destination details and reliving the travel memories gave me a great sense of satisfaction. I knew this could not end at writing that Hanoi guide. It had to be more than that.
And I created my travel blog – bulbulonthewing.
What is in a name?
The name is going to be your brand. It needs to be catchy, memorable, and relevant because it is going to become a part of you.
Bulbul is my nickname, and thus, the first half of my name is clear.
The second half, on the wing, means while flying (generally refers to birds, fowl, etc., not people or planes.) And bulbul is also the name of a bird.
So, that’s how I froze on bulbulonthewing. Interesting, right?
7 things that I learned being a Travel Blogger
1. You can start blogging with no prior experience
I kept that as the first point because I want to emphasize that travel blogging is one of those professions where you constantly learn while you work.
I started my travel blog with absolutely no experience in website design, blogging, writing for an audience, and algorithms. It took me quite a few weeks to come up with the design and flow of the website.

2. A blog post sometimes takes days to write
Initially, I thought it would take three to four hours to write a blog post, but, oh boy. it took many hours, sometimes days to write a single blog post.
Like writers, travel bloggers too often have to go through the writer’s block phase. And trust me, it might take a good number of days to overcome that phase.

3. Social media hermits have to mend their ways
I was one of those people who rarely shared personal things on social media. In fact, I did not even have an Instagram account until I started blogging. And soon I understood that Instagram and other social media platforms were different ball games altogether and needed my undiluted attention.

4. Writing good content is only half the job done – An important lesson of being a travel blogger
I learned very early in my blogging career that it is about good content and more importantly about algorithms. There are thousands of other people who are writing just as excellently as you are. So, you have to play a little smarter and work towards building your own community.
5. All pleasure trips becomes work trips
Earlier, when I used to travel, it used to be a break from work. I used to vacation to enjoy and chill for a few days before getting back to the daily grind. And now, all of these trips have become work trips. I am constantly watching out for offbeat places, popular tourist attractions, for my blog content.

6. You need to do your homework before embarking on the journey
I need to plan and research a lot about the destination more than ever before, as I want to make the best of the limited time that I would spend at the destination.
7. The journal in your mind becomes your constant companion
The travel journal in my mind has indeed become my constant companion. My mind is constantly planning and writing the content, more than my pen.

These were some of my major learnings being a travel blogger. For those of you who do not aspire to become a travel blogger… travel.. travel and see the world as much as you can. Travel is indeed the best teacher.
