Offbeat Things to do in Dubai
Dubai, as we all know by now, is chock-full of fantastic mainstream attractions. There are theme parks, fabulous monuments, museums, mosques, waterparks, manmade islands – you name it, they have it. However, there are many offbeat things to do in Dubai, something that will let you get a peep into the people behind the city. Check out our list!
1. Float Along On the Floating Venice
If you want, you can sign up for a stay at Dubai’s Floating Venice while you are in the city. The Floating Venice is a floating township that has several underwater bars and restaurants. The structure has 4 decks with 414 cabins. It’s the first such luxury vessel resort in the world. You’ll find many Venice-like effects here, such as canal-side walkways, gondolas attached to the float, Venetian-style shops, and even a Piazza San Marco!
2. Chill out at the Chillout Ice Lounge
Is the heat getting to you? Just chill out at Chillout Ice Lounge. This lounge is maintained at freezing -6 degrees all the time. You sit on chairs made of ice and eat off of tables made of ice. Of course, you’ll be wearing warm clothes and jackets. Dip into a variety of mocktails, desserts, and ices while freezing for a while before you head out into the glaring sun. Shivering away at Chillout Ice Lounge while the sun is burning your friends outside is one of the whackiest, most offbeat things to do in Dubai.
3. Bathe in Goat’s Milk!

Nothing in Dubai is ever far from that glittering metal, gold. If you like the look of gold, then here’s a way to taste it. Head to Scoopi café, and dip into the signature black diamond dessert. A single cup will set you back by 2999 AED (£588). The most expensive ice cream in the world is made out of Madagascan vanilla, Italian truffles, and Iranian saffron. What’s more, you get to keep the little silver spoon that comes with it!
5. Go Fly-boarding and Indoor Skydiving!
Flyboarding: If you love trying something different and are not afraid of a bit of adventure, then flyboarding is for you. In this sport, you’ll be standing on a board, being pulled by a speed boat on a long hose, flying high above the water!
Indoor Skydiving: Head to iFly Dubai to try your hand at skydiving. At iFly you’ll find the world’s first double vertical wind tunnel, which lets you fly as high as you like. You can fly just a few feet off the ground, or way higher.
6. Explore Dubai’s Spice Souk
Follow your nose as you explore the spice souks at Deira and Bur Dubai. Deira is a cozy village settlement with many lanes and alleys filled with many stalls selling every imaginable spice. There’s also a gold souk over here. The entire place smells like heaven. Take in the heady smell of turmeric, cinnamon, vanilla, saffron, and other potpourri blends at the souk. Cross over to Bur Dubai on the other side of Dubai Creek, and explore similar souks there.
7. Watch the Desert Sunset – top offbeat thing to do in Dubai
A desert safari is one of the main attractions in Dubai, but it is also a very offbeat activity. That is because there are so many ways to do it. You can sign up for a regular dune buggy Dubai safari with all the usual dune bashing and sandboarding sports. Or you can go off into the desert to watch the sunset. Grab a guide, ride a camel into the desert, find a nice tall dune, and lose yourself in the glorious desert sunset. Don’t forget to carry a flask of the local sweet tea.
8. Draw on a Sheesha Pipe
When in the Arab world, you should try the Arabian lifestyle. Head to Karama market and get to La Casa in Oud Mehta, close to the Lamcy Plaza. Sit back on your little couch with its TV and PlayStation, and smoke on a sheesha pipe to your heart’s content. Sip some sweet local Arabic tea.
9. Zip Over the City
Dubai’s XL zipline runs between the Amwaj Towers, all the way across the Dubai marina to the Dubai Marina Mall. You get a fantastic view of the amazing Dubai skyline along the way, such as the Princess Tower and Cayan Tower. You’ll be fitted with a camera on your wristband, which is set to take automatic videos of your zip line journey. Fly over Dubai’s streets at over 50mph!
10. Join a Food Tour!
If you are truly keen on enjoying Dubai’s culinary delights, then here’s a fabulous food tour for you. On this tour, you’ll enjoy authentic little local bites that take you on a journey from savory to sweet. You’ll also try various drinks (non-alcoholic) and get to know the city. You’ll explore the stalls of Deira and Bur Dubai, trying dishes such as cheese-stuffed riqaq and pancakes, and crisp tabbouleh salad.
