8 tips to save money for travel
Ever since I published the blog post on tips to save money while traveling, many readers have been asking me how I manage to save money for travel in the first place. Honestly, I do not understand why do people look at travel savings as a difficult task. Don’t you save for your house, for the car, or an iPhone? You could very well put aside some money for travel. All you need to have is an unconditional love for travel.
Travel is the first thing I think about when I wake up and the last thing I think about when I go to sleep.
Some of the ways that I have adopted to increase my travel savings are sometimes extreme and weird (no, I don’t starve myself). However, I will share a few easy tips to save money for travel.

1. Open a travel deposit with no withdrawal facility until the next trip
The simplest way is to set a standing instruction, preferably two days after you get your salary every month. The amount can vary according to the destination you want to travel to next. This automated monthly deduction will then act as a ready pool to fund your travel, wholly or partially. You will thank yourself later. Just imagine your trip to a neighboring country by saving just INR 5000-7000 every month for the next 6-8 months.
And trust me, it is as motivating to see your travel deposit growing as an FD. A travel deposit is what you will use to live your dreams, whereas more than half of the fixed deposit might get used during your last few years of life or maybe never.

2. Food, clothing, and shelter are still the only necessities
For someone passionate about traveling, travel is one of the basic needs too.
Don’t worry, you need not give up on everything else. All you need to do is enlist your version of indispensable basic needs. By doing this activity, you will realize that there are so many unnecessary items you spend a huge amount of your salary on.
For example, you could cancel your gym membership and exercise in that nearby park. You could easily do without one less session of Spa every month. And yes, it would not harm you if you repeat that black dress instead of buying a new one?
The next time you go shopping, don’t forget to have a look at your list of filtered basic needs. It would discourage you to spend more on the unfiltered. It’s a knack you will hold onto for life.

3. Credit card is the new black
A lot of banks offer credit cards that reward air miles on the spends. Just swipe your credit card instead of a debit card when doing any transaction. A few of them are Citi PremierMiles, HDFC JetPrivilege, SBI Card Elite, etc. The annual fee of these cards is worth paying for the miles you get in return.
The only thing you need to keep in mind while using a credit card is discipline. Firstly, never spend more than the amount you have on your debit card. Secondly, pay off the credit card bill before the due date to avoid interest charges.

4. Cook your food
You could save a substantial amount of money by cooking your food. And I am not talking only about those fancy restaurants. Even a takeaway meal is more expensive than a home-cooked meal. No, there is no need to give it up all (being a food-lover, even I couldn’t). Just decrease the number of dine-outs in a month.

5. Sharing is saving
Choosing to share your taxi ride over commuting alone can save you a considerable amount of money with no lifestyle changes. Besides, you are reducing your carbon footprint.
Do you want to jump to the intermediate level? Start using public transport, if you can, with pleasure.
6. Reduce spends on your image – one of the best ways to save money for travel
Money is often spent, unnecessarily, on building an image for yourself. Whether it is clothing, cars, gadgets, or even food. It very often gets expensive to maintain that image. Travel is the most personal of all. Spend on that instead.

7. Ditch frequent weekend getaways
Of course, traveling is traveling be it a weekend outing or an international holiday. But, I think a little differently. Traveling across the international borders will fill you with experiences if you travel for food and culture.
So, ditch those frequent weekend getaways and save that money to live experiences of a lifetime.

8. Make travel your priority – it would encourage you to save money for travel
Lastly, make travel your priority. Once you make something your priority, you naturally get motivated to work and save towards your goal. All of the above tips will naturally follow your priority for travel.
