Here is a guest post by BanBanjara. It is an Indian travel platform that is popular for providing customizable and experiential adventure trips. March is already here and it is time for people can plan some adventure trips for summer with their friends or family. So, I requested them to write a short article on the Kedarkantha trek, one of the places I have been longing to visit as well. All information, opinions, photos, etc. are by BanBanjara.
Kedarkantha Trek – A Must visit destination
Wanting to start your adventure journey in the field of Himalayan Trekking can be difficult. Tired of going to pubs and bars to spend the weekend and want something more productive and natural to spend your time with. Trekking is just the right thing for you to do as it’ll refresh your mind and body and take you away from the stress and monotonous lifestyle of cities.
OVERVIEW
Looking for a short relaxing and a bit of adventurous destination for spending the weekend can be hard. There are various treks available in the great Himalayas but only a few are open throughout the year and out of them only a few come in the category of easy and short treks. Some famous treks available in the Himalayas are Kedarkantha, Brahmatal, Kuari Pass, Hampta Pass, Rupin Pass, Chopta Chandrashila, Bali Pass, and whatnot. But out of them all, only Kedar Kantha and Brahmatal are open for the trek during the winter season and the rest are closed due to heavy snowfall.
Another problem with the majority of these treks is the prior experience you need in the field of trekking as they all come in the category of moderate treks and difficult ones which takes you around 5-8 days of trekking in the Himalayan region.
ABOUT KEDARKANTHA TREK
Kedarkantha is considered to be one of the finest summits climbs for beginners in the circle. The trek is of 4-5 days during which you’ll be covering a distance of roughly around 25km from base to base. The best part about this trek is the summit part in it. Not many treks in India give you the feeling of summit climb and if they do then those don’t fall in the category of easy or moderate ones, they are the tough ones. So Kedar Kantha on the other hand gives you that accomplishment of summiting a climb at a height of 12,500 ft and that too without much of the skills required in the trekking field. It is a perfect trek for beginners to start with.

WHAT TO EXPECT
This trek is getting so much popularity among the young ones because of so many things that this trek offers. Starting right from the drive to the base village is itself quite magnificent as you drive along the Tons river with forests on the other side and the curvy roads leading to the base village of Sankri. The trail is just awe-inspiring as the smell of Oak and Pine tree forests wrap around you while trekking the starting parts of the trek, then the campsites are so beautiful and picturesque with a lake view in one of them.
The final stretch to the summit is the best part as it gets hard as you push for the summit and when you finally reach up there, the views you get to lay your eyes upon are just jaw-dropping with 360° views of the valley and the ranges in front of you and looking at the sunrise right in front of you from the horizon is altogether something special to experience.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience as this trek remains open throughout the year and can be done all year round. If you wish to experience a snowy trail and snow-laden landscape then the winter months of January-March are the best time to go. If you want to experience the colors of spring on the trail then anytime after the end of March will be perfect and if you wish to admire the autumn colors but don’t wish to experience snow, then late October to early December is the time for you to go.

HOW TO REACH
Sankri serves as the base village for the Kedarkantha trek which is around 10 hours of drive from Dehradun. You can reach Dehradun through overnight buses or trains which are frequently available from Delhi. Upon reaching Dehradun early in the morning, there are three buses available from Dehradun to Sankri available before 8 am if you wish to take public transport. You can also hire a cab or can share the taxi with other trekkers as Sankri also serves as the base village for various other famous treks.
