Travel Depression – 7 tips to overcome it

So, the captivating vacation just got over and it is now time to go back home. And all you can think is: “I will now be in the same home (no matter how cozy it is)”; “I will have to cook my own food (no matter how stressbuster cooking is)”; “I will have to get back to work again (well, even though that’s how you earn money to spend on travels)”. Do you all identify with these symptoms of post-travel depression? I am sure most of you do.

Travel depression is a phase most travelers go through. The symptoms usually start from the last two days of vacation until about a week after returning from vacation. And it is completely alright to be glum. It is just a good sign that you have got some of the best travel moments etched on your memory.

You do not need to consult a psychologist when you feel the emptiness after your travel stint to yet another beautiful destination in the world. You can very well sustainably cure yourself. And there is not one but many ways to do that. It can be either one or a combination of a few.

Here are a few tips to cure your travel depression. Do figure out which one(s) work for you.

1. Let a weekend beat the post-travel blues

How can you expect to get back to normal if you return from a long vacation on a weekday and immediately get back to work? Honestly, it is a cruel thing to do to yourself. Give yourself a weekend (only a Sunday will also do) to make an uncomplicated shift from ‘travel mood’ to ‘normal mood’.

It gets easier to take it easy when people around you are also not working.

2. Embrace the ease to cure travel depression

Funnily enough, travel burnout is real and happens to the most zealous travelers as well. What is more amusing is the fact that you feel it only when you are back home. So, just be at ease, sleep and take a rest. Being idle will help to manage travel-related stress and will put you in a state of well-being.

3. Spend some time on knowledge sharing forums

This might sound haunting but it is a great way to detach yourself from travel memories. When you answer queries on a knowledge-sharing platform like Tripadvisor and Quora, you put a layer of your travel memories out there to help other travelers across the world. It is clearly a win-win situation.

4. Cherish what you explored

There is no denying that travel makes you explore something or the other about yourself. You might realize that you love Malaysian cuisine after returning from Malaysia. You could try preparing some popular dishes like nasi lemak and roti canai at home. Most people also fall in love with wildlife after an African holiday. Some of them continue to admire them by showing their support through local animal welfare organizations.

5. Keep busy to stay out of travel depression

Join a gym, go swimming, learn a new dance form. Just do something that keeps you going because not everybody can tackle post-vacation blues by sitting idle. Relaxing is more depressing for some travelers.

6. Memories attached to the souvenir is non-perishable

As Ashleigh Brilliant rightly said – “Keep some souvenirs of your past, or how will you ever prove it wasn’t all a dream?” While it is easy to pick up a cap from a souvenir shop, it takes some effort to preserve the same. Travelers have a different way of doing them. Some like to keep it safely in a trunk, some like to make a scrapbook, some prefer using them, some even decorate a part of the house with interesting souvenirs. This activity will make you relive all the good travel memories and make your heart smile. This is another way to banish a gloomy mood.

7. Start planning your next holiday to combat travel depression

A study showed that the very act of planning a vacation is what makes us the happiest. Yes, long holidays are not always possible. How about a weekend getaway? It is a great feeling to have something to look forward to.

Conclusion

As they say -“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer”. While it is true to a large extent, it also does not mean that you are “bankrupt” every time you come back from holiday. In fact, it means that you have just created one more fixed deposit of precious travel memories. So, instead of feeling sad about arriving, cheer up and feel grateful to have been able to explore one more travel destination.
